Hello,
My name is Tom Ocque. I am a homebrewer with the UNYHA homebrew club in Rochester. As a club we are planning a fall brew off this year and the beer style is “historical beers”. I was wondering if you have any ideas of any beer that maybe is local to Rochester or NY that would fit this description. I am not sure if Cream Ale was first produced here in Rochester or not. It is obviously well regarding nationally as a beer from Rochester.
What do you think of 12 Horse Ale? What separates it from any other beer?
Do you have any homebrew recipes, maybe from your dad’s stash that would fit this description?
Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.
TOM
Hi Tom, That sounds like a great idea. This is a tough one… Cream Ale was the first beer to be canned on January 24, 1935, “Krueger Cream Ale,” was sold by the Kruger Brewing Company of Richmond, VA.. They didn’t originate the style but most people seem to agree that Cream Ale and Anchor Steam are were the first original American beer styles.
If I think back in Rochester Brewing history for some reason “stock ales”, “sturdy ale” and “porters” come to mind. Not sure exactly what a sturdy ale is but my guess is it’s an English style winter beer. I’ll keep thinking about this.
I’ll ask my dad if he has any historical recipes he’s be willing to share.
I myself have never (unfortunately) tasted a 12 horse beer but would love to try someones interpretation of it.
12 Horse Ale A rich, full-bodied, yet remarkably smooth American-style ale, 12 Horse is brewed with six-row barley malt, corn grits, hops from the Yakima Valley and a special top-fermenting yeast, resulting in an exceptional balance and solid head. 12 Horse Ale was introduced in 1934. thanks for checking out the blog!
cheers, Daron
